HILLSDALE, MI (WTVB) – A Hillsdale man was ordered to serve between 40 and 60 years in the Michigan Department of Corrections on Monday in Hillsdale County Circuit Court after he was convicted of kidnapping, sexually abusing and torturing a New Hampshire man for five days last April.
The Hillsdale Daily News reports 31-year-old Derrick Christopher McCants was convicted on eight counts following a two day trial.
McCants was found guilty by a jury of two counts of first degree criminal sexual conduct, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, possession of methamphetamine, torture, unlawful imprisonment, assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder and assault with intent to rob.
Co-defendant 23-year-old Erik Wist of Jackson entered into a plea agreement with prosecutors in exchange for his testimony against McCants.
The victim, 52-year-old James Sorenson, was rescued after police had gotten a missing person report on him.
