COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A growing effort is underway in Michigan to show support and appreciation for police officers across the state, with the promotion of “Police Week Michigan.”
Late President John F. Kennedy declared May 15 as “Peace Officers Memorial Day”, and now the week around that date is observed as “National Police Week.”
A group, which includes Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard, has established “Police Week Michigan.” Chair and founder Amy Hawkins spoke to the Coldwater Kiwanis Club at their meeting Monday, and said the mission statement of the group is “Citizens standing up, showing up, and speaking up to let Law Enforcement know that we have their back every week of the year”.
Hawkins said that their goal is to change the conversation about police officers, who she says are coming under increasing attack, especially on social media.
A special “Police Week Michigan” celebration is planned in Pontiac May 16, 2019.
