COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Thanks in part to the record breaking cold weather of last week, health officials say mosquitoes carrying Eastern Equine Encephalitis no longer pose a threat.
It’s part of the annual weather patterns that kills mosquitoes and other insects.
There were 10 confirmed human cases and 5-deaths from the rare mosquito borne illness in southwest Michigan.
No human cases were confirmed in Branch County
For the first since 1980, some counties took the unusual measure of spraying aerial insecticides on areas considered high risk for the virus.
Health officials will keep an eye on the virus when the weather warms up again in the spring.
