COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Coldwater Township couple who were charged with mistreating a then two-year-old boy just over a year ago were both sentenced on Monday in Branch County Circuit Court.
34-year-old Allen Nagle was given a one year jail sentence and placed on probation for two years after he entered a no contest plea to fourth degree child abuse. A second degree child abuse charge was dismissed in exchange for the plea.
He was given credit for 67 days already served and the remaining jail time was suspended over probation. Nagle must also comply with all probate court orders.
Meanwhile, 24-year-old Cortni Pitts was given a one year jail sentence and was placed on probation for three years after she entered a guilty plea to attempted second degree child abuse. In exchange for the plea, two counts of second degree child abuse were dropped by prosecutors.
Work release will be considered in her case. Pitts was given credit for one day served in jail and she must pay over $1,100 in fines and court costs.
Nagle and Pitts were arrested following a Michigan State Police investigation, which according to authorities, started after the boy was slapped in the head in October 2018 at a local restaurant for taking food off his stepsister’s plate.
Troopers found the boy was malnourished and bruised when they went to the couple’s home to investigate.
