QUINCY, MI. – (WTVB) – Union City finished fourth out of 19 teams while Quincy was ninth on Saturday at the Orioles 26th annual Shawn Cockrell Memorial Invitational.
Union City’s Everett Korn won the championship at 145 poinds. Third place finishes were recorded by Colton Russell (119), Bradley Russell (125) and Garrett Iobe (140).
After being seeded third, Quincy’s Chandler Locke won the 171 poind championship. He defeated two other state-ranked wrestlers as he won his gold medal and was voted by the visiting coaches as the tournaments Most Valuable Wrestler in the upper weights.
Gerl Pish was also seeded third and he finished second at 152 pounds. Pish got a win against a state-ranked wrestler in the semifinals. Davin George lost his first match of the day and then won four straight to finish third at 285 pounds.
The tournament is held every year in honor of Shawn Cockrell. He was an outstanding wrestler for Quincy High School who lost his life in a 1993 traffic accident.
