MARSHALL, MI (WTVB) – The Michigan State Police at Marshall are reminding residents to stay alert to financial scams after a Calhoun County man was almost duped in an attempted check fraud.
State Police say the man answered an on line ad to be a secret shopper.
He was mailed a cashier’s check and told to buy several $100 gift cards. The man was then told to scratch off the pin codes on the cards and send photos of the cards and pin numbers back to the suspect or suspects.
But the man checked with his bank and before he bought any gift cards, he found out the cashier’s check was fake.
State Police say if this happens to you, it’s likely a scam. Pay close attention to any correspondence you get from potential scammers. Documents that contain spelling mistakes and poor grammer are likely international scammers operating outside of the country.
