COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A request by the American Moslem Society for a 19 foot dimensional rear yard setback variance in order to construct a building at 129 Perkins which would contain a mosque is scheduled to come before the City of Coldwater Zoning Board of Appeals on Wednesday afternoon.
The variance would bring the building to within six feet of a rear property line.
City Planner Dean Walrack says in his report for the Z.B.A. that the applicant had previously received Site Plan approval for a multi-story building on the site which ultimately proved not to be fiscally viable.
A new building design and site plan were developed late last year and Walrack says the applicant is currently in the process of purchasing some additional land from a neighbor which will place the building approximately 11 feet from the nearest rear property line.
The plan was reviewed by the Coldwater Planning Commission on February third. It was tabled pending Wednesday’s review by the Zoning Board of Appeals. The plan presented to the Planning Commission did not anticipate the purchase of the additional land.
