COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Cardinals clinched at least a share of the 2019-2020 Interstate 8 Conference boys basketball championship Tuesday night as they defeated the Harper Creek Beavers 56-44 at the Coach Floyd Eby Gymnasium.
Coldwater got off to another slow start offensively in the first half. They trailed 8-4 after the first quarter and 24-21 at halftime.
The Cardinals turned the game in their favor in the third quarter when they outscored the Beavers 16-6. A Dylan Targgart triple at the buzzer put the Cardinals ahead 37-30 and Harper Creek was unable to recover.
A 19-14 final quarter for Coldwater sealed the deal. Targgart led Coldwater with 19 points with 16 of those points coming in the second half. Ethan Crabtree had 15 points which included seven straight converted foul shots. Spencer Rodesiler added nine points.
Austin Santure led the Cardinals in rebounding with ten boards. Crabtree and Rodesiler both had five assists while Brandon Downs had three steals.
Harper Creek’s Rae’Quan Funches scored a game-high 22 points.
The Cardinals are now 10-3 in the I-8 and 12-6 overall.
Harper Creek swept the underclassmen games. They won the J.V. game 60-42. Aaron May and Lu LeBron each had nine points for Coldwater.
The Beavers also won the freshman game 55-23.
