COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A group that backs second amendment rights is asking the Branch County Board of Commissioners to pass a resolution that declares the county a second amendment sanctuary county.
Representatives of the group spoke to Commissioners Tuesday.
Karen Barkman said 18 counties in Michigan have become sanctuary counties as part of a nationwide movement. Hillsdale County Commissioners adopted a resolution Tuesday morning.
She said the group We the People of Branch County wants their second amendment rights protected adding they “have had enough gun ban laws…that only restrict and harm law abinding citizens. The criminals don’t follow laws any way so passing more laws won’t solve any problems”.
Barkman said over 500 signatures have been collected on a petition in support of the resolution.
The resolution states the Board affirms their support for the Branch County Sheriff and the Branch County Prosecuting Attorney “in the exercise of their sound discretion to not enforce against any citizen an unconstitutional firearms law.”
A copy of the resolution would be forwarded to State Legislators, the Governor and all U.S. Congressmen from the State of Michigan.
Since it was not an agenda item, no action was taken by Commissioners Tuesday. Commission Chair Ted Gordon said he wanted a discussion during the March 5 work session with possible action during the next regular meeting March 10, 2020.
