COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The number of COVID-19 cases in Branch County outside of the Lakeland Correctional Facility reached 30 on Tuesday.
The Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency reported one additional case in both Branch and St. Joseph Counties on Tuesday while two additional cases were reported in Hillsdale County.
Hillsdale County has had 79 positive cases of COVID-19. Far fewer cases have been reported in St. Joseph County as that county has had 22 positive cases.
Nine deaths have been reported in Hillsdale County while two people have died in Branch County and one has died in St. Joseph County from the virus.
The Calhoun County Public Health Department reported a third death in its jurisdiction on Tuesday. There have been 91 positive COVID-19 cases in Calhoun County with 35 people requiring hospitalization.
As of Tuesday night, the Michigan Department of Corrections reported 76 prisoners and 21 staff members at the Lakeland Correctional Facility in Coldwater have tested positive for coronavirus. Lakeland has had two prisoner deaths and it has the second highest amount of prisoners with COVID-19 among all of the D.O.C. facilties in Michigan.
As of Tuesday, the state’s official COVID-19 tracking website reports that 27,001 individuals have tested positive for the acute respiratory illness in Michigan.
1,768 Michigan residents have died from COVID-19, after state health officials confirmed the first death from the illness back on March 10. That’s an increase of 1,366 positive cases and 166 deaths from the day before.
