COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Those in the second ward in the City of Coldwater who are interested in running for a partial term seat on the City Council ending November 13, 2023, may request an affidavit of identity forms from the City Clerk’s Office with the filing deadline of 4:00 p.m. next Tuesday, April 21. You’re asked to call ahead for an appointment.
Because the Governor declared a state of emergency due to the Covid-19 pandemic on March 10 and the Michigan Legislature extending the state of emergency to April 30; the City’s signature requirement is temporarily suspended for candidates filing for election to any vacant City Council seat in the November general election.
As an alternative to providing a nominating petition with enough signatures on it, candidates may instead contact the Clerk with his or her intention to stand for a particular office and shall file with the Clerk all other normally required documents, including the Affidavit of Identity and the Affidavit of Qualifications.
To be eligible for Elective Office, a candidate must be 21 years old, be a registered elector of the City and if running for a Council position, they must reside in that ward, be a resident of the City for at least two years continuously immediately preceding the election, and cannot be in default to the City.
If there are more than two candidates running for the position of Councilmember Ward 2, an August Primary will be scheduled. The Primary Election date is August 4 and the General Election date is November 3.
