COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Council would like to see the Planning Commission at least consider having a retail Recreational Marijuana Establishment in the downtown area in addition to others that would be located within the D-2 Heavy Industrial District.
A group of proposed Recreational Marijuana Establishment Ordinances were tweaked last week by the Planning Commission.
But Council Member John Petzko said during Monday night’s electronic City Council meeting having a retail recreational marijuana business downtown should at least be considered during a public hearing on June 1 during a Planning Commission meeting and other Council members agreed.
Any recreational marijuana business in the downtown area would still have to meet zoning criteria such as not being closer than 1,000 feet from a school or church.
Petzko said, “if we are going to try to revitalize the downtown and get foot traffic into our downtown, I don’t see why we are limiting ourselves to only the C-4 district out by I-69”.
Input from the Downtown Development Authority is also expected on the matter.
After the June 1 hearing, the Planning Commission would then make a recommendation to the City Council who has the ultimate authority on enacting ordinances.
The proposed ordinances are scheduled to be introduced during the June 8 City Council meeting with final adoption scheduled for June 22.
