BATAVIA TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – The Capri Drive-In wants to reopen for the 2020 season after being shut down by Governor Whitmer’s Stay Home, Stay Safe Executive Order last month but so far they can’t.
Capri owner Sue Magocs says in an e-mail the Governor has turned down their request to open up at this time.
The frustration of the situation is evident on the drive-In’s marquee. It says, “Want to Open, Can’t, Call Gov, Thanks.”
Whitmer extended and revised her executive order last week which is in effect until May 15.
Movie theaters are not allowed to open yet and the state has nixed plans for a drive-in movie theater on the Canterbury Village property in Oakland County’s Orion Township. Owner Keith Aldridge was planning to start showing movies on Thursday and had marked off 20 feet of space between vehicles.
According to a posting on the Capri’s Facebook page, they were promising to strictly enforce social distancing. Masks would also have to be worn unless there were health concerns.
The Capri opened its gates Easter Sunday when the Coldwater Area Ministerial Association held a drive-in service which attracted hundreds of vehicles.
