BATAVIA TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – The plight of the Capri Drive-In has been picked up by a national news media outlet.
Capri owner Sue Magocs was interviewed Sunday morning on the Fox News Channel as she explained her frustrations with being unable to open for the 2020 season because of Governor Whitmer’s “Stay Home, Stay Safe” Executive Order.
The Capri was originally scheduled to open March 20.
The Capri and all movie theaters including drive-ins are unable to open in Michigan until at least May 28th after Whitmer extended a State of Emergency order which is seperate from the “Stay Home” order which expires on May 15th.
Magocs said this week the Governor turned down their request to open.
The Capri has been a family owned business for 56 years.
The frustration of the situation is evident on the drive-In’s marquee. It says, “Want to Open, Can’t, Call Gov, Thanks.”
According to a posting on the Capri’s Facebook page, they were promising to strictly enforce social distancing. Masks would also have to be worn unless there were health concerns.
When asked why the Governor has not responded to their social distance plans, Magocs said on Fox News, “That’s a good question. If you can answer that, help me. I don’t understand.” Compared to other businesses that have been allowed to opened up, Magocs said “I can still social distance better than that, you’re sitting in a car.”
Magocs added people need to get out right now and that coming to the drive in “seems very safe”.
The Capri opened its gates Easter Sunday when the Coldwater Area Ministerial Association held a drive-in service which attracted hundreds of vehicles.
