MOUNT PLEASANT, MI (WTVB) – The collegiate athletic careers of three former Coldwater High School athletes are now in limbo after Central Michigan University Athletic Director Michael Alford announced on Tuesday the men’s track and field program would be discontinued effective immediately.
Former Cardinals Connor Covert, Logan Targgart and Cole Targgart were all on the roster for the university’s 2020 track and field season.
According to a university press release, Alford made the announcement amid looming university wide budget cuts. Alford said “we did not make this decision lightly, but we are facing a new financial reality due to enrollment challenges and now COVID-19”.
Covert and the Targgarts are among 36 student-athletes directly impacted by the decision. Two full-time assistant positions also are being eliminated.
Scholarships for current men’s track and field student-athletes including scholarships awarded to new students beginning in the fall of 2020 will be honored for the duration of their CMU academic careers.
Student-athletes who would like to join another institution’s roster will be released without penalty and are free to transfer immediately.This decision leaves the university with 16 athletic teams.
