COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – After initially remaining on schedule for a December 2020 opening, it appears the new Lakeland Elementary fourth and fifth grade school in Coldwater will not be ready until next spring.
Groundbreaking for the new building on Western Avenue took place in April 2019, and it was hoped it would be completed in time for moving into the new classrooms over Christmas Break. The shutdown of construction under Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s Executive Order has now put the construction several months behind schedule.
Coldwater Community Schools Superintendent Terry Ann Whelan told the school’s Board of Education this week that they are now hoping to move into the new building in April 2021 during Spring Break for the district.
The new school building will replace Lakeland Elementary near Coldwater Lake, and it’s being built following the approval of a millage and bond issue in November 2017 by district voters.
Whelan says replacement of large portions of the roofs at Coldwater High School and Jefferson Elementary will take place this spring and summer, as well as the replacement of the high school lockers and the bleachers in the high school gymnasium. Those projects are being paid for by the district’s sinking fund millage.
