BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB/WNWN) – A Hastings man was formally charged on Monday in connection with a carjacking and high speed chase that took place over the weekend in Calhoun and Kalamazoo Counties.
WWMT-TV reports 27-year-old Robert Hanson has been charged with carjacking as well as three counts of resisting or obstructing officers, fleeing and eluding an officer and malicious destruction of police property.
Hanson allegedly carjacked a vehicle in the Family Fare parking lot on East Columbia Avenue Saturday morning.
Speeds during the pursuit reached nearly 100 miles an hour as it went through two counties.
Police report the vehicle being pursued weaved in and out of traffic and nearly struck at least one patrol car.
The pursuit went into Kalamazoo County even though a front tire came off.
Hanson lost control of the vehicle on 32nd Street near G Avenue. He was arrested after police say he tried to take off on foot.
A Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department vehicle was damaged during the pursuit.
