UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – A major water main project underneath the Saint Joseph River starts on Monday in Union City.
There will be road closures and detours as the new line will be tied into the existing water mains.
The new water main will be drilled 10 feet underneath the river extending from the Village Office Parking lot to the Veterans Memorial Parking Lot at East High and Broadway.
The new 12 inch line will replace the current aging 10 inch line that is leaking 180,000 gallons of water a day into the river.
Village officials say the current line rests on the river bed, whereas the new line will be constructed underground using directional bore drilling.
There are expected to be parking issues in both the Village lot and Veterans Memorial Lot for two weeks as the work is being performed.
Road closures and road work is anticipated during the project at North Broadway near West High in the 100 block of East High St and on Coldwater Road near Broadway as the old line is disconnected and the new line is attached.
