MENDON TWP, MI (WTVB) – A Sturgis woman was killed Friday morning in a St. Joseph County crash that was triggered by a wheel that came off another vehicle.
The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office says it happened at about 11:40 a.m. on Silver Street and Hampton Road in Mendon Township.
They say the front driver’s wheel came off a Jeep Wrangler being driven by 22-year-old Carlos Montoya of Sturgis.
The wheel entered into the north bound lane which caused a north bound box truck driven by 58-year-old Michael Butcher of Plainwell to lose control and cross into oncoming traffic.
Butcher’s truck then struck a passenger car being driven by 20-year-old Julie Renee Zimmerman who was killed in the collision. Zimmerman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Montoya was uninjured while Butcher was treated at the scene and released by Lifecare Ambulance. The crash remains under investigation.
