FREMONT, IN (WTVB) – A barn with nearly 700 bales of hay went up in flames on Thursday morning at the Wild Winds Buffalo Preserve north of Fremont, Indiana.
The fire was reported just before 7:30 a.m. as smoke could be seen for several miles.
Fremont firefighters were initially dispatched. They were joined by crews from nearly a dozen fire departments from throughout Steuben County and northwest Ohio as well as from Branch and Hillsdale Counties.
Among those sent to the scene were firefighters from Quincy and Lakeland.
Two horses in the barn got out safely and property manager Dan King says no animals were lost.
Heavy equipment operators had to be called in and tankers were provided by the various fire agencies. The fire was called under control in under eight hours.
Citizens from throughout the community donated food and drinks to keep firefighters going as temperatures reached into the low 90s.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is not known.
