MARSHALL, MI (WTVB) – Police and a 30-year-old man exchanged gunfire at a home in the 700 block of West Hanover Street in Marshall late Friday morning after officers tried to facilitate a mental health order from the court to transport the individual to a hospital for treatment.
Marshall Police say when two Marshall police officers and a Calhoun County Sheriff’s deputy contacted him at the door, he immediately opened fire on them. The officers returned fire and retreated safely to their vehicles.
The Calhoun County Sheriff Emergency Response Team, which also includes officers from the Marshall Police Department, contacted the man over the phone.
They were able to go into the home and the man was taken into custody at about 1:30 p.m..
He had been shot and was taken to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo.
The incident is being investigated by the Michigan State Police and is ongoing at this time.
Other responding agencies included the Marshall Ambulance, the Marshall Fire Department, Battle Creek Police, Michigan State Police, Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi and the Albion Department of Public Safety.
