COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – As the Coldwater Board of Public Utilities continues to upgrade its telecommunication system with high-speed fiber optic technology, the Coldwater City Council approved new rates for gigabit-speed internet service for residential and business customers at its meeting Monday night.
Starting September 1st, internet rates for fiber customers will be $59.95 a month for residential customers and $79.95 a month for businesses, with speeds around 16 times that of the current cable modem internet service.
Currently, residential customers pay $49.95 a month for internet access via a cable modem, or $39.95 a month with the addition of Skitter TV, while businesses pay between $65 and $185 a month. As the fiber network upgrade is completed, cable modem service will be retired.
In explaining Coldwater’s move to becoming a “Smart City,” BPU Director Jeff Budd cited a study commissioned by the American Planning Association that stated young professionals look at availability of high-speed internet access above schools and recreation when considering places to relocate.
