DETROIT, MI (WTVB) – Detroit Tigers pitcher Matthew Boyd is still in line to start next week’s opener, despite being exposed to Covid-19.
Boyd assisted an injured friend, and when the man was treated at the hospital, he tested positive for the virus. Boyd missed a pitching session Tuesday, but after he tested negative he was able to pitch Wednesday.
He will head to the mound again Sunday, putting him on his regular rest schedule ahead of the opener in Cincinnati.
The Tigers have added two relievers to the player pool. Zack Hess was drafted by Detroit in the seventh round in 2019.
Last season, Hess had 33 strikeouts with a 2.60 ERA in 27 and two third innings with Class A West Michigan.
Alex Lange was acquired from the Cubs in the Nick Castellanos trade. Lange had a 2-and-1 record with a 3.45 ERA in nine appearances for Double-A Erie in 2019.
