Lewis Saunders, 81 of Quincy, Michigan, passed away on Thursday, August
6, at Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Coldwater Michigan. Lewis was born on February
19, 1939 to Max and Frances (Zeller) in Quincy, Michigan. Lewis was born in the
family home located on North Briggs Road.
He married Carol Morrison on July 31, 1956 in Hillsdale, Michigan. He
graduated from Quincy High School in 1956. He worked most of his life as a
farmer following in his Grandpa Zeller’s footsteps as a farmer and carpenter. Lewis’
love of farming and animals continued all of his life. After retiring from farming, he worked at the
Department of Corrections in Coldwater, Michigan for 12 years. After retiring
for a second time, he started Forty Oaks Country Homes selling Modular and
Manufactured homes until his health declined. Lewis hosted 40 Oaks Encampment
on his property for 5 years.
Lewis had many accomplishments throughout his life. He was part of the crew that built I69 and
Highway 6 in Indiana, was the Union Stewart and built Great Mark Western which
is now Conagra and was the first one in Branch County to put in a center pivot
irrigation. Lewis was also the National Treasurer and State President of the
American Agriculture Movement. He was
one of the farmers who drove the tractorcade to Washington DC from all over the
United States.
Lewis is preceded in death by his grandson, Brandon Saunders; great
granddaughter, Dominique; his parents, his grandparents, Lewis and Grace Zeller
and George and Carrie Saunders.
Lewis is survived by four children, Michelle (Bill) Stockberger of
Salem, South Carolina, Robin Alexander of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Scott (Shelly)
Saunders and Gregg (Sharon) Saunders both of Quincy, Michigan; eight
grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and two sisters, Sue Wygant and Kay Rice
both of Quincy.
Funeral services for Lewis
Saunders will be held Monday, August 10, 2020 at 12:00 Noon at the Calvary
Baptist Church in Quincy with Pastor Frank Snyder officiating. Interment
will follow at Lakeview Cemetery. The family will receive friends for
visitation on Monday from 11:00 AM until the time of service at the church.

Maple Lawn Nursing Home or Calvary Baptist Church.
