BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – The numbers are now official. Tuesday’s Primary results in Branch County have been certified by the County’s Board of Canvassers.
Just over 30 percent of registered voters in Branch County cast a ballot on Tuesday which was the largest turnout for the August primary in at least a decade.
Of the 32,453 registered voters in the county, 9,836 voted on Tuesday.
It far surpassed the 21 percent turnout in August of 2018 when the millage for the new Branch County Jail was approved.
Due to COVID-19, many more people requested an absentee ballot and it’s thought that was one of the reasons why more registered voters took part on Tuesday.
Several hotly contested races in the Republican Primary was also listed as a factor.
Branch County Clerk Terry Kubasiak said all precincts in the county reported they issued more absentee ballots than in previous elections.
Over 1,700 absentee ballots were issued in the City of Coldwater where a total of 2,284 votes were cast which resulted in a registered voter turnout of 28-point-eight percent.
