DETROIT, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Tigers claimed right-handed pitcher Dereck Rodriguez off of waivers. Rodriguez was waived by San Francisco last week and has been assigned to Toledo. The 28-year-old allowed six runs on ten hits over four innings in two appearances with the Giants this season. He is the son of former Tigers and Hall of Fame catcher Ivan Rodriguez.
The Tigers made one move before yesterday’s trade deadline, dealing outfielder Cameron Maybin to the Chicago Cubs. Detroit acquired infield prospect Zack Short from Chicago in the deal. Short had six home runs, 25 RBI and batted .235 in the minors last season. He is expected to report to the Tigers’ alternate training site in Toledo this week. Maybin was in his third stint with Detroit after he was signed to a one-year deal during spring training.
The Tigers begin a two-game series against the Brewers in Milwaukee tonight. Michael Fulmer gets the start for Detroit while Milwaukee counters with Josh Lindblom in the opener.
Tomorrow, Spencer Turnbull goes to the hill for the Tigers against the Brewers’ Adrian Houser.
