DETROIT, MI (WTVB) – The Detroit Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals split a seven-inning doubleheader in St. Louis Thursday.
In the opener, Yadier Molina, Tyler O’Neill, Lane Thomas, Paul Goldschmidt and Rangel Ravelo all homered as the Cardinals won 12-2. Jeimer Candelario went deep for Detroit. Jack Flaherty got the win and Tarik Skubal the loss.
In the nightcap, the Tigers scored five times in the top of the seventh to rally for a 6-3 win. Candelario and Jorge Bonifacio both homered for Detroit. Tommy Edman homered for St. Louis, which led 3-0 in the fifth. Jose Cisnero got the win, while Giovanny Gallegos took the loss.
Tigers pitcher Jordan Zimmermann made his 2020 debut as he started the second game of a doubleheader against St. Louis yesterday. Zimmermann did not figure in the decision after giving up four hits, one unearned run and striking out two in three innings. He was activated from the 45-day injured list earlier this week after dealing with a right forearm strain.
The start may have been Zimmermann’s last for Detroit, as he is in the final year of a five-year contract.
The Tigers open a three-game series against the White Sox in Chicago tonight. Casey Mize gets the start in the opener for Detroit against Chicago’s Lucas Giolito.
The Tigers are 20-and-23 on the season and seven games behind the AL Central leading White Sox.
