DETROIT, MI (WTVB) – Detroit Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire is calling it quits. He announced his retirement over the weekend because of health issues.
“Gardy” managed 16 years, including the last three with Detroit. He is a prostate cancer survivor and struggled with stomach issues and food poisoning this season. He said he needs to step back and take care of himself and his family.
Bench coach Lloyd McClendon will manage the rest of the season.
