MARTIN TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A motorcyclist is dead after he rear-ended another vehicle in a traffic backup on U.S. 131 in Allegan County.
It happened just before 7 p.m. Tuesday on northbound U.S. 131 between mile markers 56 and 57 in Martin Township, north of Plainwell.
Allegan County Sheriff deputies were on scene for a minor crash in the area when the motorcyclist was unable to stop, struck an SUV, and was ejected from the bike.
Many other drivers helped the 26-year-old Grandville man as they waited for first responders to arrive, but he was eventually pronounced dead at the scene.
The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and the driver of the SUV was not hurt.
Authorities believe speed and distracted driving were factors in the fatal crash, but the incident is still under investigation by the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction team.
