COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A 9-yard touchdown run by Coldwater’s Cam Torres with 50 seconds left broke a 16-16 tie and lifted the Cardinals to a 24-16 win over the visiting Marshall Redhawks at Cardinal Field.
Marshall scored on the opening drive of the game. Redhawk QB Cooper Middleton found Trenton Fuller in the end zone from 2 yards out, then connected with Ezra McAllister for the 2-point conversion.
Coldwater’s equalizer came in the second quarter on a 7-yard Spencer Rodesiler TD run. Deandre Douglas ran in the 2-point conversion to knot the game at 8-8.
It remained an 8-8 tie through the end of the third quarter. The Cardinals took their first lead of the game on the first play of the fourth quarter, thanks to a 14-yard pass from Cooper Fredlund to Spencer Rodesiler, who would also run in the 2-point conversion for the 16-8 lead.
Marshall answered midway through the quarter on a 2-yard Greg Wallace run. Backup quarterback Nate Tucker ran in the 2-point conversion to tie the game up at 16-all.
The game-winning drive for Coldwater took 5:43 off the clock, with the Torres TD run followed by a Rodesiler 2-point conversion run. Marshall could only muster an 11-yard drive in the final 50 seconds, and the Cardinals were able to run out the clock.
Spencer Rodesiler led Coldwater with 16 carries for 80 yards and a rushing touchdown, and also had 3 receptions for 30 yards and a receiving touchdown. Cam Torres added 53 yards on 13 carries and the game-winning score, while Deandre Douglas had 8 carries for 33 yards and 3 kick returns for 94 yards total. Starting QB Cooper Fredlund was 3/8 passing for 23 yards, 1 TD and no interceptions. Aiden Marsden and Krishten Brouse led the Cardinal defense with 7 tackles apiece.
For Marshall, Copper Middleton was 15/25 passing for 108 yards, 1 TD, and an interception. Leading rusher Greg Wallace had 13 carries for 52 yards and a score, while tight end Trenton Fuller had 6 receptions for 55 yards and a touchdown. Greg Wallace, Jamari Culliver, and Trenton Fuller had 9 tackles apiece for the Redhawks.
Coldwater improves to 2-0 and will host Loy Norrix on October 2nd. Marshall drops to 0-2; they are scheduled to host Jackson Northwest next week.
