Our Good News of the Day from the Branch County Community Foundation:
This week, The Wendorf Family Fund, a Donor Advised fund held at the Branch County Community Foundation, granted a total of $17,662 to Quincy Community Schools for Wi-Fi hotspots and classroom materials.
This particular collaboration between the Donor, the Branch County Community Foundation and Quincy Community Schools is an excellent example of how the Branch County Community Foundation works to connect passionate people and resources to serve the community we love. The Wendorf Family Fund was interested in hearing how they were able to help with any needs of Quincy students, especially with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Community Foundation had knowledge of some needs after talking with a Quincy School Board Member, Erin Veysey. The Community Foundation quickly got to work and collaborated with Quincy Community Schools to identify specific needs and the funding from the Wendorf Family Fund quickly went to Quincy Community Schools.
$7,200 of the total grant will be used for purchasing hot spots to lend to students who do not have access to Wi-Fi, or their Wi-Fi is too unstable for virtual learning. This grant will make it possible for the district to purchase the 30 hot spots that they are short on, and also pay for a year-long subscription.
$10,462 of the total will be used to supply new books for the 5, 6, 7, and 8th grade English classes, so students will be able to have their own set of books that are required for reading. Currently, these classes only have enough sets of books for 25 students to use at a time. With COVID-19 restrictions, students are not able to share materials and disinfecting in-between each class is impossible without ruining the books.
With this funding, the Quincy Middle School English department will have enough books for approximately 100 students to have their own sets. This will be beneficial during virtual learning and when in person instruction returns.
