DEARBORN, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Gas prices in Michigan are down 5 cents compared to a week ago. Michigan drivers are now paying an average of $2.22 per gallon for regular unleaded. This price is 16 cents more than this time last month but still 33 cents less than this time last year.
Motorists are paying an average of $33 for a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline; a discount of $11 from when prices were their highest July of 2019.
Last week, the Energy Information Administration measured weekly gasoline demand at 8 million b/d, up from the previous week, while gasoline stocks decreased about one million bbl down to 237.7 bbl. Officials say that typically, this combination would result in cheaper gas prices, but with crude oil pricing at the highest levels since last February, that is not the case.
“December saw the second largest pump price jump of 2020, ending with the Michigan state average 25 cents higher than it began,” AAA spokesperson Adrienne Woodland said in a statement. “Despite low demand, pump prices are holding steady due to solid crude oil gains.”
- Most expensive gas price averages: Marquette ($2.29), Jackson ($2.24), Lansing ($2.23)
- Least expensive gas price averages: Traverse City ($2.07), Benton Harbor ($2.16), Saginaw ($2.18)
In Kalamazoo County, the average gas price is sitting at $2.21 per gallon of unleaded.
