WASHINGTON D.C. (WKZO AM/AM) – Holland native and former Michigan Republican Party chairwoman Betsy DeVos is stepping down as U.S. Education Secretary. She sent President Trump a letter last night thanking him for the chance to serve, but also adding his rhetoric inspiring the riot at the U.S. Capitol this week was too much.
DeVos said instead of highlighting accomplishments made under Trump, “we are left to clean up the mess caused by the violent protestors overrunning the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to undermine the people’s business.”
The New York Times published a copy of the letter, in which DeVos wrote “That behavior was unconscionable for our country. There is no mistaking the impact your rhetoric had on the situation, and it is the inflection point for me. Impressionable children are watching all of this, and they are learning from us. I believe we each have a moral obligation to exercise good judgment and model the behavior we hope they would emulate.”
DeVos is the second member of Trump’s Cabinet to resign over the president’s response to protesters who breached the Capitol to prevent the certification of the Electoral College vote.
