ALLEN PARK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Detroit Lions are moving quick to make New Orleans Saints assistant head coach/tight ends coach Dan Campbell their next head coach.
ESPN reports the Lions are expected to hire Campbell now that the Saints have been eliminated from the playoffs.
The 44-year-old Campbell will replace Matt Patricia, who was fired in November in just his third season on the job. The Lions went just 13-29-and-1 overall under Patricia.
Tom Brady threw two touchdown passes and also ran for a score as the Buccaneers beat the Saints 30-20 in the NFC Divisional Round in New Orleans. Leonard Fournette and Mike Evans each caught TD’s in the win. Devin White recovered a fumble and came up with a key interception for Tampa Bay, which moves on to the NFC Championship Game against the Packers in Green Bay.
Drew Brees threw a touchdown, but was picked off three times in what could possibly be his final game for the Saints. He says he’ll take some time to think about his future.
The Kansas City Chiefs lost quarterback Patrick Mahomes to a concussion in the third quarter, but held on to beat the Browns 22-17 in the AFC Divisional Round at Arrowhead. Mahomes threw one TD and ran for another before the injury as Kansas City built a 19-3 lead and hung on.
The NFL’s conference championship matchups are set. The top-seeded Chiefs will host the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship Game Sunday in Kansas City. It will be the top-seeded Green Bay Packers hosting the Tampa Bay Bucs in the NFC Championship at Lambeau.
Super Bowl 55 is February 7 in Tampa.
