EAST LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Michigan High School Athletic Association executive director Mark Uyl said on Monday they are unable to provide specific plans yet as to the status of the contact winter sports of basketball, wrestling, competitive cheer and ice hockey.
Those sports remain on pause for contact activities including competition until February 21 according to the most recent update to the emergency order from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
Uyl said in a statement they are still evaluating the best options and they will be ready with specific timelines as soon as M.D.H.H.S. clears contact sports to begin full activity.
He went on to say, “We have said from the start of the 2020-21 school year that we would do everything possible to have three seasons, and play all three to completion. Our strong advocacy for all sports and seasons – and especially Winter sports – continues every day.”
Meanwhile, 58th District State Representative Andrew Fink is urging Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and the M.D.H.S.S. to allow winter contact sports to resume in Michigan schools. Fink says he has heard from countless parents, coaches and students about their concerns regarding winter sports. He said scientific data shows the extremely low likelihood of the COVID-19 virus being spread through contact sports.
