MARSHALL TOWNSHIP (WKZO AM/FM) — Calhoun County authorities have a person in custody following intense moments during the attempt to arrest a man who reportedly used his 3-year-old son to shield himself from authorities.
At around 9:00 p.m., deputies received information about a reported stolen vehicle that had led a pursuit on I-94 in Kalamazoo County and was headed into Calhoun County. Deputies located the vehicle on I-94 near Verona Rd. in Marshall Township. It was smoking heavily, apparently from mechanical problems, but still in motion. During an attempted traffic stop, the driver stopped abruptly nearly causing a crash with other vehicles on the freeway.
The driver exited and began to argue with deputies before reaching in and removing his 3-year-old son to use as a method of keeping deputies away from him. The man became more agitated and began walking into oncoming traffic while still holding his child.
A taser was eventually used and the man, identified as a 30-year-old from Wayne County was arrested and found to have 35 outstanding warrants. He faces several new charges now in Calhoun and Kalamazoo counties.
