COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – An application to the Michigan Economic Development Corporation to help fund a proposed project to turn the former Gillespie Funeral Home into a multi-family dwelling is almost ready to be submitted.
The City of Coldwater and Southern Michigan Bank and Trust are partners on the project. Southern owns the property at 27 Marshall Street.
Economic Development Assistant Audrey Tappenden told the D.D.A. Board on Wednesday there has been a lot of progress since plans for the property were announced.
Lisa Miller from the Branch County Economic Growth Alliance says if things work out, the renovation work could start this summer.
The grant funding would be used to restore the building and turn it into a seven unit housing structure that would be known as “Southern Flats.”
The project is eligible for $420,000 of grant funding to help offset the total project cost which is currently estimated at $1 million.
