LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) – The State Dept. of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy has issued permits to Enbridge regarding the company’s proposed construction of a tunnel in the Straits of Mackinac to house Line #5.
The company stated that the decision does not affect Governor Whitmer’s efforts to shut down Line 5, and it will continue to challenge that action in federal court.
The Michigan Environmental Council criticized the EGLE decision, saying that the Dept. is supposed to protect Michigan’s environment, but that this decision will threaten wetlands and drinking water.
A spokesman for the MEC stated that Enbridge cannot construct a tunnel without obtaining a bottomlands lease, under the Great Lakes Submerged Lands Act.
