Rita May Salyer (Johnson) age 90 of Union City, Michigan passed away of natural causes surrounded with the loving support of her six children on January 31, 2021 at Glenn Arbor Hospice in Battle Creek.
The family will be holding a private graveside service at Riverside Cemetery in Union City.
Rita was born on November 10, 1930, attended country school on Barnhart Road and lived in the Union City community her entire life. In addition to her family, Rita cherished the many friendships she had in her community and enjoyed bowling until age 87, sewing, crafts, fishing, playing cards and other activities to keep herself active. She especially enjoyed spending time with her large extended family.
For many years, Rita owned with her husband a farm equipment business, running the parts and service department in addition to raising her children. She will always be remembered as a soft-spoken, unselfish and gentle person who cared deeply about her family and friends.
She is survived by her brother Hal Johnson of Coldwater; children, Cathy (Gary) Bohacz of Bronson, Howard (Alex McNall) Salyer of Union City, Judy (Randy) Wadley of Union City, Dean (Kay) Salyer of White Pigeon, Don Salyer of Oshtemo and Laurie (Jeff) Towns of DeWitt; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren. Special thanks to her home caregivers for their loving care and support.
Rita was preceded in death by her husband, Chester “Chet” Salyer; parents, Howard K. and Irene Johnson; and brothers, Melvin Johnson and Frank Johnson.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that memorial contributions in Rita’s name be made to Union City Senior Center, c/o the Village of Union City, 101 S. Broadway Street, Union City, MI 49094 or to Branch County Meals on Wheels, c/o Community Action Agency, 285 N. Michigan Avenue, Coldwater, MI 49036.
