UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – Union City’s Department of Public Works along members of its Electric Department had to work for several hours on Thursday to clean and repair a sewer lift station that had become overwhelmed with “flushable” wet wipes.
Crews from the City of Marshall provided assistance.
Village officials said on their Facebook page this is a wide spread problem for municipal sewer systems and wipes marked “flushable” are wreaking havoc on sewer systems.
Since the wipes don’t degrade, they combine with other substances to clog up the system and take out sewer lift station pumps or completely block the system.
Eventually, it costs our ratepayers thousands of dollars each year to repair the lift stations.
The public is asked to help keep systems running, do not flush so-called “flushable” wipes down municipal systems.
