COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Two Lakeland Correctional Facility Prisoners have been charged in connection with an attempt to smuggle drugs into the prison last September.
40-year-old Michael Stone and 34-year-old Matthew Siders have both been charged with conspiracy to bring contraband into the prison.
Both are also facing fourth time habitual offender sentencing enhancers if they are convicted.
A third suspect in the case, 32-year-old Amber Duren entered a guilty plea to attempting to furnish contraband to prisoners. She was sentenced last month to nine months in jail and was placed on probation for a year. Duren was given credit for 28 days already served.
The Michigan State Police investigated the incident after the Department of Corrections uncovered the plot to smuggle drugs into the prison by having Duren throw them over the perimeter fence. According to court documents, Duren was Siders girlfriend.
Documents also indicate four other prisoners were involved in the plot and the State Police report filed about a month ago requested prosecutors file charges against them.
The State Police worked with the Department of Corrections, the drug enforcement team S.W.E.T., the State Police Aviation unit, a State Police Canine unit, the D.N.R. and the Branch County Sheriff’s Department Canine officers.
