GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Grand River Aseptic Manufacturing in Grand Rapids was chosen by Johnson & Johnson to produce the single-dose vaccine that received emergency use approval Saturday, February 27th, from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
It’s the second COVID-19 Vaccine to be produced in West Michigan, and the third to be approved for emergency use. Moderna and Pfizer are the other vaccine manufacturers with U.S. approval. Pfizer is currently producing its two-dose vaccine at its facility in Portage, MI.
FDA scientists determined the Johnson & Johnson vaccine was about 66% effective at preventing moderate to severe COVID-19, and about 85% effective against the most serious illness.
Tests showed the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines were 95% effective at protection against symptomatic COVID-19.
