COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Lady Cardinal Gymnastics team defeated the Tecumseh Indians on Saturday 135.15 to 127.275 in their final conference competition of the regular season.
There were several highlights for the Cardinals as they honored their three seniors for 2021.
Coldwater opened the competition on the vault, scoring 33.45 points. Senior Abby Travelbee earned a second place finish with her mark of 8.45. McKenna Hantz placed third for her efforts at 8.4.
Senior Keristin Alexander made her vault debut for her final Cardinal competition, earning 7.5 points. Coldwater Coach Kim Nichols said, “We wanted to keep the traditional senior night as normal as possible, however senior Shelby Taber was unable to compete with us for her last meet. We included her in every way possible. And we were so thrilled for Keristin to compete as an all-around gymnast in her final outing.”
The Cardinals dominated the top three spots on the uneven bars to best Tecumseh by a margin of over five points, picking up 32.35. Travelbee collected 8.625 for her nearly flawless routine and a first place finish. Next in line was Layla Schoch (2nd) at 8.475, followed by Hantz at 8.05.
The Coldwater gymnasts posted a season best team score on the balance beam after introducing some new skills and combinations. The Cardinals tallied 33.5 points for their efforts, which included four stuck routines. Schoch posted a personal best of 8.925 points after performing her signature back tuck bonus skill on the beam for second place. Travelbee earned third place for her efforts at 8.675 points.
The Lady Cards came up big on the floor exercise, posting their best team score of the season at 35.85 points. Schoch claimed top honors on the floor posting a personal best score of 9.3 points for her nearly flawless routine. Leah Goodwin collected a season best of 8.875 points, followed right behind by Sarah Forrister. The junior posted 8.85 points for her second personal best in as many outings.
In the all-around competition, Schoch tallied a personal best of 35 points after performing her best meet of the season to finish in first place overall. Travelbee earned second place with her total score at 34.575 points. Hantz (4th) was just shy of her personal record with 33.1, followed by a fifth place finish from Goodwin at 32.425.
Coldwater will look to perfect their upgraded skills and combinations and polish their routines in preparation for the postseason tournament. Coldwater will travel to Rockford High School on Saturday, March 20 for the MHSAA Regional competition.
