GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — March 2021 has been one of the driest months on record in West Michigan and in many areas across the state.
Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Grand Rapids, and areas in-between, are all in the ‘Abnormally Dry’ category according to the Michigan Drought Monitor. In the southeast corner of the state, near Detroit, ‘Moderate Drought’ conditions are being reported.
This is causing many local fire agencies to issue temporary fire bans until conditions improve. Dry air and dead vegetation will increase the potential for fires to spread out of control.
The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for nearly all West Michigan counties related to high fire danger which is in effect until late Tuesday. Rain showers are expected at times from Tuesday evening through Friday, which should ease the abnormally dry conditions.
