HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Attorney Robert Baker, now representing Holland restaurant owner Marlena Pavlos-Hackney, says he’s pulling together her case.
But it’s complicated, he said, by the first person who gave her legal advice, a Texas man named Rick Martin who doesn’t have a law degree. Baker said his job right now is like putting “toothpaste back into the tube,” as Martin didn’t file any legal papers for Pavlos-Hackney, nor did he have legal standing to appear with or for her in a Michigan courtroom.
Baker said in some states, law-school attendance is not required for getting admitted to the state bar association and becoming a licensed attorney.
Texas rules are similar to Michigan’s, which does require law school attendance and a law license. Martin remains in Ingham County Jail on a contempt of court charge until June 4, 2021, facing a $7,500 dollar fine.
Pavlos-Hackney has kept her restaurant, Marlena’s Bistro & Pizzeria at 909 Lincoln Ave. in Holland, closed since her March 19 arrest. A GoFundMe set up to help her with expenses has so far raised $288,143 dollars of the current $300,000 goal. She has a trial date tentatively set for June.
On Facebook late yesterday, she posted a message to supporters, writing, “To all my supporters. I am doing well and my attorney is working on my behalf. I am unable to send or receive messages through Messenger, because it has been disabled by big tech/ Facebook. Thank you all for your support, prayers, cards, and messages. The drawings from your children really touched my heart. It really means a lot to me and I am truly grateful for everyone that is willing to express themselves for our freedoms. Prease the Lord and God bless America.”
