Michigan health officials confirmed 7,819 new cases of COVID-19 in their Thursday report. It brings the pandemic total to over 723,000 now as a surge continues, much of it being attributed to new variants, especially the more contagious B.1.1.7 strain. Another 73 COVID-19 deaths were also reported in the state Thursday, with 43 of them identified through a review of vital records. This increases Michigan’s death toll to 16,400.
