KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Freeze Warnings were in effect across most of West Michigan during the middle of this week, and fruit farmers will be waiting to see what, if any damage some chilly morning low temperatures caused.
It’s too early to say…that’s how Bill Shane, southwest Michigan tree fruit educator, describes fruit prospects after back-to-back nights of mid to low 20s. Growers are examining flowering plants to determine how serious damage might be, but a detailed judgment could be weeks away.
Shane says even if a significant percentage of flowers are brown we still might end up with a good crop this season. Temps fell below 28, and that defines a hard freeze, but hopefully not a catastrophic one.
