HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Allegan resident Jason Watts, 44, has been bounced from his position as treasurer of the Sixth Congressional District’s executive Republican committee, according to a story from The Detroit News.
Members voted 26-0 on Saturday to remove Watts, after suggesting his behavior hurt the GOP. U.S. Rep. Fred Upton represents the Sixth Congressional District.
Besides saying earlier said he did not vote for Donald Trump in 2016 or 2020, Watts also told The Detroit News he believes he contracted COVID-19 on March 25th a meeting the committee held at a restaurant in Portage, where, he told the paper, only three of the 70 attendees wore a mask, in a room designed for a 40-person capacity.
Watts landed in the hospital for days with severe COVID-19 symptoms.
In a public Facebook post earlier this month, Watts recently wrote that the story of his getting COVID-19 became public after a reporter saw online that he was of being ill online and asked questions.
“I got Covid. I likely got it at a GOP event. A friend, who’s a reporter, saw on Facebook that I was in the hospital. I answered his questions. I did not seek out the media,” he wrote, in part, adding “That report went public and went national. I’ve spoken to three reporters. I’m not looking for attention, I just want to recouperate [sic] at home.”
He went on to say he was being responsible by answering the reporter’s questions, adding that the reporter is a friend of his.
Watts also said any suggestion that he intentionally got the virus “is beyond the pale. My wife and I just want to get better at home.”
He ended his comments with an appeal for people to “wear your mask and get your shot. The only way we get through this virus is everyone doing their part.”
