ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Phone scams are circulating through Michigan lately, and St. Joseph County is no exception.
On Wednesday, the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office warned residents of a scam involving callers masquerading as local police, the Sheriff and other law enforcement agencies.
According to the Office, scammers create a fake name and number to make it appear as though they are calling from a local agency.
They will then tell the victim that there is a warrant out for their arrest, which can be mitigated by paying a fine, or staying on the phone with the scammer while the victim drives to a law enforcement agency.
The Sheriff’s office is reminding residents that investigations are not conducted this way, and they will not call and ask for payment over the phone. They will also not call and tell you there is a warrant for your arrest.
Officials reminds residents to never give out personal information over the phone or to anyone you are not sure of.
