GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The weather has been pretty dry in Michigan recently, apart from some rain showers this week. But we have not had enough precipitation to ease dry conditions across the state.
According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, nearly all of the lower peninsula is currently in a Moderate Drought. It comes after a winter season that was drier than normal and those dry conditions have continued for much of the spring season so far.
Meteorologist Nathan Jeruzal with the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids told FOX-17 that the current timing of these drought conditions in Michigan has some positives and negatives.
“One bad thing with the drought, especially this time of the year, is that vegetation is still greening up. Until it greens up, fire danger is a serious problem. A lack of water will also impact farmers as we get into the growing season.”
Jeruzal says it would not take much rain to get out the Moderate Drought, as it is only a level-one drought currently out of four possible levels. But if Michigan stays relatively dry for the next several months, there could be some issues, especially the threat of wildfires.
